Stakeholders Breakfast 2017
On December 8th, 2017, former Charlotte Mayor and United States Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx addressed CBI’s 20th Anniversary Stakeholders Breakfast, and asked one very poignant question:
“Why did it take Harvard University to tell us we had an economic mobility problem? Where is our conscience?”
With a record-breaking attendance of over 800 community leaders and government officials, the breakfast, titled Equity 20/20: A Vision For Charlotte-Mecklenburg, celebrated 20 years of CBI’s work to achieve racial and ethnic inclusion and equity in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community.
Along with powerful stories of impact, the breakfast featured a performance by guest artists from the upcoming Opera Carolina production of the “I Dream” rhythm and blues opera, as well as inspirational remarks from The Park Church’s Bishop Claude Alexander.
Tom Warshauer, head of CBI’s volunteer Board of Directors, issued a call to the attendees to continue working for inclusion and equity recalling CBI’s beginning in 1997. “So, just as our community embarked 20 years ago, we must again commit to own the issues of inclusion and equity, to learn our real history, to share that history, to disrupt the patterns of complacency that infect too many people in our community. We must own that the impact of a lack of equity is our problem; it may be a problem that we inherited, but it is none the less ours now.”
