A Statement on the Passing of James E. Ferguson II

Community Building Initiative is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of James E. Ferguson II. Beginning with his young adulthood in Asheville, NC and throughout his long life as a practicing attorney here in Charlotte, James Ferguson has been a powerful force in the pursuit of civil rights, restorative justice and racial equality.

Mr. Ferguson’s history with CBI goes back to the very beginning. He joined as co-chair of the Leadership Team of the Community Building Task Force in April 1997. This task force would grow to become Community Building Initiative. His involvement with CBI continued throughout its 28-year history, and in recognition of his invaluable contributions to our organization and to the community at large, CBI named its annual Community Impact Award in his honor. Mr. Ferguson was the first recipient of the James and Barbara Ferguson Community Impact Award in 2023. His leadership and guidance established the foundational work upon which CBI continues to operate today.

Community Building Initiative extends our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and to all those whose lives have been made better by his tireless activism. The loss is certainly felt by us all, and the positive impact of his life’s work will endure for generations. The community he built grieves collectively with his passing.
